Andrei was born in Moscow, Russia and started training in boxing at the age of 10. In 1977, at the age of 13, he added judo and SAMBO to his regimen. In 1979 Andrei was accepted to an elite Olympic development school of SAMBO - SAMBO70. He graduated in 1981 with a title of Sports Master of judo and SAMBO, USSR, and was awarded with a black belt of 4 degree in judo. In 1983 he was drafted into the Soviet Army as a sergeant of VDS Spetsnaz (airborne forces). After demobilization in 1985, he enrolled in State Central Order of Lenin Institute of Physical Education in Moscow (presently known as Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport and Tourism), and graduated in 1990 with a double degree in coaching and personal training and sports medicine and massage and physical therapy.
He worked as a body guard and stunt instructor during his university years. After graduation, Andrei became professor of physical education and judo and SAMBO head coach at Moscow Civil Engineering Institute (presently known as Moscow State University of Civil Engineering).
In 1991 Andrei moved to the US and started working as personal trainer and self-defense instructor in a variety of sports clubs in Massachusetts. In 1993 he got MA massage license and opened International Massage Therapy Center at Fitness First Gym in Arlington, MA. From 1995 to 2006 Andrei worked as massage therapist for NHL’s Boston Bruins. He retired in 2006. In 2007 he opened SAMBO 7 School, and two years later SAMBO 7 won 2009 USA Open SAMBO Championships.
Even though his students undergo rigorous training and withstand demanding schedule, their rewards are equally gratifying as one of his students moved from white belt to black belt in 1.5 years, got accepted into West Point Academy, and competed for USA in 2009 SAMBO World Championship. Andrei believes that hard work and perseverance combined with high goal setting and self-accountability yield consistent results.
Presently, Andrei is the head coach of USA SAMBO Junior National Team. |
