NESAcademy Birthday Parties at NESA Birthday Parties at NESA
Program Director: Nathaniel Weitzer
Nathaniel Weitzer Nate has always been a fan of anything athletic as he played soccer, basketball, football, and other sports constantly from the very early age. However, his parents reasoned that these hobbies did not provide sufficient structure during the summer break and had Nate sign up for his first Appalachian Mountain Club backpacking course at the age of 13. Nate enjoyed taking on the challenge of wilderness exploration, and as his muscles were getting stronger and his backpacking skills were improving, he was falling in love with nature and all its intricate beauty.

That newly discovered enthusiasm led Nate to take an AMC leadership course with Wilderness First Aid, to backpack the length of the Long Trail in Vermont and eventually to hike the entire Appalachian Trail after his high school graduation. The confidence gained through these experiences allowed Nate to backpack through the high passes of New Zealand's stunning mountains and the foothills of the Himalaya in Northern India. While pursuing his Bachelors Degree in European History at Skidmore College in upstate NY, Nate used his map reading abilities and skills in the wilderness to begin summiting the 46 4,000 footers of the Adirondacks, and he reached the goal of climbing all 46 in August 2011.

He continued furthering his Outdoor Education by taking a Mountaineering Course in Alaska and a Wilderness First Responder certification course through O.W.L.S. In addition, Nate spent time at local elementary schools for hands-on credit, volunteered at the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in the July of 2008 and worked with kids in outdoor settings during the summer 2011 through the Adirondack Trail Improvement Society.

About the program:
NESA Nature Adventure Education combines various outdoor pursuits like hiking, backpacking, mountaineering, rock climbing, wilderness survival, and expeditions to teach the ultimate necessary nature exploration skill set to NESA families.

The greatest thing about backpacking is the ability to go farther and deeper into the wild than one could otherwise go. Due to this quality, backpacking is a hobby that never has to be finished because it can always take one to new places. However, in order to open up one's world to all these incredible hobbies, one first builds a foundation of skills in order to gain competency in the wilderness.
Highlights of NESA Nature Adventure course with Nate:
  • Learn basics of backpacking
  • Acquire foundational knowledge of map reading, compass using, wilderness thriving
  • Program is local and allows for exploration fun without disrupting child's weekly routines
  • Adventure takes young and/or mature explores off the couches and into the back yard, into the local park and eventually on an actual field trip to the White Mountains
  • Students will come out of the course with more self confidence as well as the ability to create trips, plan routes, pack efficiently, adapt and respond to emergency and/or survival situations quickly and efficiently
  • This opportunity is open to children ages 8-15 and adults

My son Cole (15) has been enrolled in the homeschool program on Tuesdays for 2 or 3 years now. He loves it! He takes gymnastics and parkour regularly and has taken science, math, and chess in the past. He also appreciates open gym! I also appreciate open gym because I usually get some exercise in while Cole is in class or playing. I also appreciate the parents and staff, who are friendly and interesting to talk to when I feel like socializing. I highly recommend NESA to everyone!
