Jujutsu is the martial art developed by the ruling samurai
warrior class of Japan. Students use an opponent’s energy
against them. This allows even smaller unarmed people to
defend themselves from stronger, armed, or multiple
opponents. The training is extremely practical – focusing on
self defense. However, students will enjoy a fun workout
that also builds balance, coordination, and general fitness.
Jujutsu practice includes punching and kicking like karate
as well as off-balancing, and manipulation of opponents
joints. Classes are fun and tailored to the needs and
development of each individual student. The teaching method
focuses on skill development rather than rote memorization
of techniques or forms. Students are often pleasantly
surprised at how quickly they learn.
Like most martial arts, jujutsu practice develops
self-awareness and mental focus. Many students report
reduced stress, increased confidence, and better focus at
work or school. All students will become better prepared to
prevent or mitigate crime against themselves and their
families.
Moore Sensei is
one of the best martial arts instructors with whom I
have ever had the pleasure of working. There are
many competent martial artists out there who have
devastating fighting skills and abilities. Moore
Sensei gives me the impression that he is one of
them. However, what separates him from many others
in the field is his ability to transmit his
knowledge of self-defense to the student. Moore
Sensei possesses a sensitivity, which allows him to
recognize each student’s strengths and weaknesses,
and teach them accordingly.

When I was
fortunate enough to begin working with John Moore
about a year and a half ago, I had never studied
jujutsu before. While I am still far from an expert
and still have much to learn, John’s teachings over
the past couple of years have allowed me to quickly
begin to understand the concepts and principles of
the art. Rather than merely practicing techniques,
John has taught me the principles behind the
techniques. He has shown me the importance of
balance, center, and visual and spatial awareness.
He has helped me to create an individual style
within the framework of jujutsu, rather than forcing
me to memorize rote techniques.

John is extremely
approachable and is very passionate about
self-defense. He is especially good at providing
very real situations in which you may need to defend
yourself. He not only shows you how to defend
yourself but how to use your peripheral vision,
listen to your senses, turn ordinary objects on your
self into weapons to defend yourself and do what you
need to do to survive. The class is very hands on
and you actually practice the moves he shows you on
him or a partner. He provides mats, pads, weapons
and even a suit that he wears so you can really
defend yourself from him. You come out of just one
class very educated and armed with the knowledge of
how to protect yourself from an attacker.

John is
definitely one of the best teachers I have ever had.
Not only is he able to break down a complex martial
art into simple concepts but his classes are taught
with safety as the top priority. John teaches
martial arts in an effective and practical manner.
From day one, John’s students will learn techniques
that can save their lives. He encourages his
students to ask questions and is always happy to
explain a concept until it is thoroughly understood.
He creates an atmosphere where fun and learning go
hand in hand. Students are encouraged to smile and
laugh which makes learning that much easier. John
has a true passion for the martial arts and his
knowledge is not just confined to Jujutsu. He is a
true student of the martial arts which in my opinion
makes him that much more of an effective teacher.
